How Icarus Really Died

#S004

We’re aware from Greek mythology that Icarus flew too close to the sun, which melted his waxed wings, whereupon he crashed back on earth.

Here we see Icarus built of walnut burl with many antique accouterments, including an African bird mask in copper straddled by a headless baby. The birdcage contains feathers and a small bird's nest. A single egg lays motionless on the wood base. The antique wood cigar cutter is a metaphor for fire and ashes… the addition of pheasant feathers and a prehistoric cave bear fossil represent the bird body and tail.
